Flamencomatkailu on syventymistä ja aitouden etsintää / Flamenco travel is about immersion and the search for authenticity

-------------------------------------------------------------------
This past Winter and Spring have been very active ones both when it comes to my studies and to the Flamenco Association. After finishing with this years festival, I graduated from my studies at Haaga-Helia University of Polytechnics where I studied Travel Management. I wrote my thesis on the motivational factors of flamenco travel and now it has finally come the time to write the long promised blog post on the matter.
The first question - and very understandably so - from the people who are not as immersed in the flamenco world as I am, is flamenco travel? is there such a thing? I have heard this question also from several people whose flamenco hobby is. But the truth is that although the concept of flamenco travel is not very known, it is one aspect of active travel, which is a growing part of the travel industry. People travel more and more according to their interests and this is true of both flamenco professionals and those whose hobby flamenco is. Additionally, motivation is an issue that interests me more and more every day and the motivational factors of travel are more and more relevant factors especially in active travel and travel experience.

I carried out my study with the members of the Helsinki Flamenco Association. The research included two parts, the first being an electronic survey to which I received quite a nice pool of answers. I analysed the answers according to the theory that I had found on travel motivation and dance and festival travel. After the analysis I constructed the questions for the interviews I conducted to three members who had different kind of experiences in flamenco travel.

A few more or less surprising factors stood out in my mind when analyzing my study. The first was that there actually was previous literature written on flamenco travel, and especially the motivational factors of flamenco travel. The second was that the motivational factors of flamenco travel were mostly the same for the members of Helsinki Flamenco Association as they were in the literature. And thirdly, the motivational factors of flamenco travel were mostly the same for the members whether flamenco was their hobby or profession.

What were the motivational factors then? The most important factor was that flamenco travel allows the traveler to deepen their own skills and knowledge on flamenco. Second, the search for authenticity was very important. Thirdly, flamenco travelers value the company of people with similar interests. The that extent, fourthly, flamenco travel is being seen as highly refreshing and entertaining and fifthly, the experience is deeply spiritual. While analyzing these factors, it became very clear that many of the members think very similarly about flamenco as I do. To me flamenco is the best way to challenge myself, and the search for authenticity is important - whatever that authenticity means to each individual. Flamenco is also very much about the sense of community where each one of us gets to be ourselves. Flamenco as art, and especially flamenco travel, is seen as a source of spirituality and it causes a deep sense of refreshment. One of the most often heard frases is "flamenco saves you". In fact, one of the interviewees stated that flamenco travel is most likely the most refreshing thing one can do.

Even though the segment for flamenco travel is not large, especially not in Finland, I found this topic to be very motivating and interesting for myself. And who knows, maybe I get to produce some flamenco trips myself one day...

Uskalluksen ja vahvuuden vuosi 2016 / Year 2016 of Daring and Strength

Moments of 2016
(Photos by me and Jaana Ollila)

Year 2016 was in many ways a year of daring and of understanding one's own strength. The further the year went,

the better I realized this. At the end of Spring, I accepted the post of the Chair of Helsinki Flamenco Association after having acted as Vice Chair during the previous term. For me - an aficionado with "only" little under seven years of experience in flamenco - this was a big leap. Beforehand and in the beginning of the term I worried how I would be accepted amongst the members. However, early on I received some very valuable advice from a much appreciated flamenca: "whatever happens, act like you know what you are doing. Then pick up the phone. Remember that you are not alone." This advice I have tried to follow although, in hindsight, I could have picked up the phone more frequently. During the first six months of my chairmanship I have learned numerous things of which the most important once are: I can manage anything, asking for help is not a sign of weakness and together we are strong.

This year has been a time of daring and of trusting in one's strength in other aspects as well. After a much needed summer of rest, I attacked the rest of my studies and worked with my thesis with the aim of finishing before Christmas. Despite moments of nearly losing faith and bouts of losing motivation, I did reach my goal. My graduation only awaits a few more grades. At the end of winter there will be a reason to celebrate! Once again I got to recognize organizational skills and determination as my strenghts. My thesis will be handled in this blog with more depth shortly.

For me the best way to mirror my own strength and daring is through my hobby, flamenco. In the summer I read a quote from psychologist Maaret Kallio: "one must write with a hint of fear" (Eeva May 2016). This is true of anything creative and of course for me true also in blog writing, but most of all in flamenco dancing in the form "one must dance with a hint of fear". This thought I have carried with me for the rest of the year. Already during the summer I visited the legendary Amor de Dios academy in Madrid, which demanded some daring. Even though the mid-level course was most definitely the correct, while demanding level for me, I was incredibly pleased when maestra María Juncal did not suggest after the first class of technique that I move to the lower level. Or when I survived the week of classes with Rafael Estevez when I vowed during the first one not to return. This attitude I took with me in the fall to the advanced/professional level course of maestro Alfonso Losa. I dared to step outside my comfort zone, and it was... So challenging, but oh so wonderful...

A great deal of daring and belief in one's own skills has been also needed in this fall's duet project. The made-to-measure tangos de malaga y titi -choreography has been made for me and my fellow flamenca Jaana by our wonderful teacher Elina Robinson. As musicians we have the lovely singer Sirpa Airisto and skillful guitarist Petri Lahtinen. At the beginning of the project we agreed with the choreographer that in every practice together we will get new material and the whole choreography will be assembled in five practices before the Christmas break. Above all the project has given belief in one's own skills and the possibility to analyze one's own dancing.  As the main responsibility of training has been with us dancers, we have gotten the chance to be more even more in charge of our own learning and development. Thanks to this project we have also had the possibility of getting a closer grasp of assembling a flamenco choreography which has further strengthened the experience. Now there is no turning back as the duet will be performed first time at the opening club of the 19th Helsinki Flamenco Festival in early February. I want to already at this stage thank my duet partner Jaana and our musicians for great collaboration. And special thanks go to our radiant teacher-choreographer Elina for having trusted us. Flamenco will carry us on.

Syksy on taas / Once again it is Fall

Compañía Mrs. Robinson

Mistä huomaa, että syksy on tullut? Ensinnäkin ilma tuoksuu erilaiselta. Toisekseen koulu alkaa.

Syksy, Fall
How do you know that Fall has come? First the air starts to smell in a different fragrance. Then schools begin. I already began work on my thesis on the motivational factors of flamenco travel a few weeks ago. Next I will be working on the theme-based interviews that will give further insights to the results of the questionnaire conducted in the Spring. This week we also started with the courses for this Fall - the last courses of the program. I can't believe that after these final courses, I will have completed all the courses of the Travel Management Curriculum! By the end of the year I plan to have finished with writing and presenting my thesis. What will I come up after that? Maybe I can finally continue and finish my recipe book project that has been on hold for the last couple of years. Or maybe I will come up with something completely new and exciting. Who knows!

We have also started with flamenco classes again. This Fall I will be working with alegrias, bulerias and tangos de malaga. There will be some new insights as now my dance studies also include a bit of  rhythm and singing. And maybe there is even something a bit special on store... more about that later. To begin the Fall term we also held a Mrs. Robinson flashmob to honor the marriage of the lovely Elina, my teacher for many years now. That small project was full of moments of joy as we planned it and got to surprise Elina with it. What a great show of team work and warm feelings! :) Our mini skirt choreography in honor of our teacher made us even joke that we will start a flamenco dance company, Compañía Mrs. Robinson. And the encore will always be performed in mini skirts!

Kevät meni, kesä tuli! / Spring went, summer came!

Muuten olenkin tanssinut flamencoa varsin aktiivisesti. :D Joskus on hyvä osata nauraa itselleen!

Ladies on stage

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Last practice!
The spring went by and I was incredibly busy with studying, board activities and flamenco dancing! My studying included both Internet-based courses and work with my thesis on motivational factors of flamenco travel. The name of the thesis is shaping up to be Travel motivates flamenco. In early Spring I carried out a survey for the members of the Helsinki Flamenco Association and got a total of 55 answers, which made me very happy! After the survey I have been working on analyzing the results and fashioning suitable questions for the interviews that I plan to carry out before Midsummer. I still plan on graduating at the end of year 2016. There are a few courses left for the Fall and of course the presentation of my thesis! Olé!

Other than studying, I have spent most of my time dancing flamenco. Last week we had our Spring recital with the flamenco students of Elina Lehtola and Laura Rintamäki with a great live band! A total of approximately 80 students on stage and a band composed of Finnish top flamenco artists! What could be better! We spent countless hours practicing for the recital both at our regular classes and in our own extra practices. My pieces included an advanced level solea por bulerias - tangos choreography and a tientos with bata de cola and as a final touch a bit of bulerias with our "sweat technique" group. For this bulerias bits we had had a chance to participate in the choreographies. During this intense practice period we coined a new term based on my teacher Elina's piece Imperfecto and my last blog post. The term is imperfectionism and it reminds us of the fact that perfectionism is not the purpose. :D Sometimes its good to laugh at yourself!

Shoes on a break!
And so it came out that even though I did not achieve my best technically on stage, the sold-out recital was full pleasure and an incredible experience! After the recital it was great to celebrate all together by having dinner in center of Helsinki!

And now we are enjoying a summer break!
