Tällä reissulla pääsin myös kokeilemaan miltä tuntuu treenata flamencoa sen kotimaassa. Aika jännää! Löysin Barcelonan läheltä Cornellà de Llobregatista sopivan koulun, jossa järjestettiin tunnettujen flamencomaestrojen kursseja viikonloppuisin. Ensikosketukseni kouluun oli hieman omalaatuinen, sillä saapuessani koululle sain huomata tuntien alkaneen puoli tuntia ilmoitettua aiemmin. Espanjalainen aikakäsitys oli jotenkin kääntynyt päälaelleen...

Osallistuin kahdelle ns. master classille, eli kahden päivän lyhyelle tiiviskurssille. Ensimmäisenä opettajanani oli todella herttainen ja ilmeisen lahjakas jereziläinen tanssijatar Gema Moneo, joka opetti meille todella sähäkkää buleriasta. Tai no, näytti meille, mitä haluaa meidän tekevän ja sitten yritin tehdä perässä. Tällainen lennosta oppiminen ei tosiaankaan ole vahvin puoleni, mutta siinähän se harjaantui. Toisen kurssin opettajana oli jo maaliskuulta Helsingistä "tuttu" Alfonso Losa, joka opetti lauantaina meille kolme tuntia buleriasta ja sunnuntaina kolme tuntia tangosta sekä hieman tekniikkaa alkuun molempina päivinä. Materiaali oli taattua Losaa, tuntui että samaan aikaan olisi pitänyt olla menossa ainakin kolmeen suuntaan. Onneksi kevään sitkeä tekniikkatreeni tuotti tulosta ja sain Losalta merkkejä, että tekniikka on kunnossa, vaikka nopeudessa onkin tekemistä.

Gema Moneo

Paljon ei materiaalia kerennyt jäämään mieleen näiltä parin päivän kursseilta, mutta tärkein anti olikin se, että uskaltauduin menemään tunneille ja selviydyin niistä todella kovassa seurassa, vieraassa koulussa. Tajusin myös, kuinka paljon jo osaan ja toisaalta sain muistutuksen siitä, kuinka paljon on vielä opittavaa. Onneksi on loppuelämä aikaa. Ennen kaikkea koin sen, että maailma ei kaatunut, vaikka en oppinut kaikkea. Itse asiassa, se ei olisi kaatunut, vaikka en olisi oppinut mitään!!

 

Alfonso Losa

On this trip I also got to experience what it is like to take flamenco classes in its original environment. Really exciting! From Cornellà de Llobregat, near Barcelona, I managed to find a school that had courses by renowned flamenco maestros during the weekends. My first experience with the school was quite astounding as when I arrived for the first class, I found that it had started a half an hour too early. Spanish sense of time upside down...

I took part in two so called master classes, short courses of two days. My first teacher was a really sweet and incredibly talented yound bailaora from Jerez, Gema Moneo. She taught us a really fiery bulerias, well, I don't know if taught is the right way to say it... Maybe she showed us what she wanted and then we had to try to comply. Really not my strongest skill... but at least I got to practise that! The second course was taught by Alfonso Losa, who was at least a bit familiar from his course in Helsinki in March. Losa taught us three hours of bulerias on Saturday and three hours of tangos on Sunday and a bit of technique in the beginning of each day. The material was typical Losa, I felt like I should have been moving into three directions at once. However, the persistent technique training from the spring paid of as Losa did show me that my technique was quite good although there is a lot of work to be done with my speed.

I did not manage to learn or memorize a lot of material from these two courses but the most important thing was that I had the courage to go and that I survived in really tough company in a completely unfamiliar surroundings. I learned once again how much I can already do and, on the other hand, got a reminder of how much there is still to learn. But, I have the rest of my life to learn! And the most important lesson was that it was not the end of the world that I did not learn everything. In fact, it wouldn't have been the end of the world if I hadn't managed to learn any material at all!

Barcelona on suuri ja mahtava kaupunki myös ravintolatarjonnan puolesta. Tapaksia tarjotaan jokaisessa baarissa ja ravintolassa ja enimmäkseen ne ovat todella hyviä. Paikallisia herkkuja ovat patatas bravas, perunat tulisen kastikkeen kera, bombas, uppopaistetut perunapallerot, jotka minusta muistuttivat aika lailla friteerattua perunasoselaatikkoa, ja monenlaiset merenherkut. Muita suosikkeja meidän perheessä ovat suussa sulava pata negra -kinkku, pienet pimientos de Padrón -paprikat ja perunamunakas.

Tlaxcal
Meksikolainen Tlaxcal oli ehdoton ykkönen meidän mielestämme, sillä ruoka oli tasaisen herkullista ja myös tarjoilu ystävällistä. Tacot ovat paikan erikoisuus ja niitä suosittelen kuten myös Tlaxcalin margaritoja. Erityisesti mangomargarita oli minun suosikkini, mutta myös guayabamargarita oli maukas. Viikonloppuna varaus on pakollinen!

Negro Carbón
Argentiinalainen pihvi- ja hampurilaispaikka, jossa on ystävällinen palvelu ja todella hyvä ruoka. Pihvit sulavat suussa ja myös hampurilaiset ovat erinomaisia. Myös patatas bravas -annos oli onnistunut sekä Campos Verdes -salaatti. Myös tänne on varattava pöytä viikonloppuna.

Blacklab
Port Vellin satamassa sijaitseva pienolutpanimo ja ravintola, todella kokeilemisen arvoinen. Vaihtuvat talon omat oluet ovat erinomaisia ja ruoka tasaisen maukasta. Hyvän ruuan ja oluen lisäksi täältä saa myös erittäin juomakelpoista viiniä!

Paikallista ruokaa tarjoavista ravintoloista suosikkimme oli Barcelonetan kaupunginosassa L'Ostia -niminen ravintola. Parhaat patatas bravas koko reissulla, tosin niissä oli mukana lihaa, eli ei sovellu kasvissyöjille, ainakaan sellaisenaan. Erinomainen oli myös italialainen Buon Appetito, jossa suosittelen erityisesti alkupalaksi provolone-uunijuustoa. Pizzat ja pastat erinomaisia ja palvelu erittäin hyvää. Myös tänne pöytävaraus perjantaina ja lauantaina on suositeltava. Intialainen ravintola Rangoli aivan San Sebastianin rannan lähettyvillä oli myös todella positiivinen kokemus, ruoka erinomaista ja palvelu todella ystävällistä.

Tapas in Barcelona

Barcelona is a great city also when it comes to restaurant selection. The traditional tapas dishes are available at every bar and mostly they are really good. Of the local delicacies I urge you to try patatas bravas, potatoes with spicy sauce and bombas, which made me think of deep-fried shephard's pie. And of course the seafood is readily available! Other favourites in our family are pata negra -ham, pimientos de Padrón -peppers and potato omelette.

The following were our favourite restaurant on this trip. The information on them can be found in the Mundo section:

Tlaxcal
This Mexican taquería is definitely worth the visit and was our absolute favourite with consistenly delicious food and friendly service. The tacos are exquisite with clean, simple flavours. Try also the margaritas, especially the mango margarita was my favourite, although the guayaba margarita was also tasty. For weekends reservation is a must!

Negro Carbón
This is an Argentinian steak and hamburger restaurant with really delicious food and friendly service. The Argentinian beef melts in your mouth and the burgers are nice as well. Patatas bravas was also a good choice for starter as was the Campos Verdes salad. Also here a reservation is needed for weekends!

Blacklab
This small brewery and restaurant is located at Port Vell in the harbour of Barcelona and serves house beers and really good food with friendly service. The house beers vary according to availability. We sampled the food on many occasions and it was consistently tasty. And, in addition to the food and tasty brews, the wines are also quite drinkable!

Our favourite for Spanish food was L'Ostia in Barceloneta with very tasty dishes and the best patatas bravas on this trip. There is some meat in the dish, so take this into consideration if you are a vegetarian. For Italian our favourite was Buon Appetito. I can strongly recommend the provolone al horno for starters and the pizza and pasta is really good as well. Make a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights. Also a favourite was the Indian Rangoli situated by San Sebastian beach. The food was really tasty and the service impeccable.

Monasterio de Pedralbes

Vaikka eilinen pilke silmäkulmassa kirjoitettu blogikirjoitus saattoi antaa hieman sellaisen kuvan, että   asenteeni Barcelonaa kohtaan on negatiivinen, ei asia ole niin. Nuo asiat ovat vain huomioita, joita olen tässä parin kuukauden aikana tehnyt. Totuus on, että Barcelona on hieno suurkaupunki, jossa riittää nähtävää ja ihmeteltävää jokaiselle. Koska olen käynyt Barcelonassa aiemminkin ja nyt oli runsaasti aikaa tutustua muihinkin paikkoihin kuin ihan "tavallisimpiin" nähtävyyksiin, olen päässyt käymään monenlaisissa paikoissa. Esimerkiksi kävimme katsomassa heinäkuun alussa paikallisten flamencokoulujen "Catalunya promet" -näytöstä Nou Barrisin jokakesäisillä flamencofestivaaleilla. Nou Barrisiin ei useinkaan ulkomaalaisia ilmeisesti eksy, kun takaisin tullessa taksikuski kysyi, että mitä ihmettä oikein teimme siellä asti, vaikka melko sujuvaa espanjaa puhunkin.

Tässä minun suosikkini tältä reissulta:

Monasterio de Pedralbes
Kuningatar Elisendan 1300-luvulla rakennuttama klarissalaisluostari, joka toimi vielä 1980-luvulla luostarina on rauhaisa nähtävyys Pedralbesin kaupunginosassa. Luostarissa pääsee tutustumaan nunnien elinoloihin monelta vuosisadalta. Luostarille pääsee keskustasta FGC-junalla, pysäkki on nimeltään Reina Elisenda.  Luostarin lähistöllä kannattaa myös katsastaa Finca Güellin lohikäärmeportti, joka on Antoni Gaudín suunnittelema ja Palacio Real de Pedralbesin kauniit puutarhat. Palacio Realin edestä pääsee metrolla takaisin keskustaan.

Parque Laberinto de Horta
Myös Hortan labyrinttipuisto sijaitsee hieman kauempana kaupungin vilinästä. Sinne pääsee helpoiten metrolla, pysäkki on nimeltään Mundet. Labyrinttipuisto ja sen takana sijaitseva metsikkö on myös aikanaan kuulunut aatelissuvulle ennen kuin siitä tuli yleinen puisto. Picniceväät mukaan ja eksymään labyrinttiin! Labyrintin lisäksi puistosta löytyy myös lukuisia pieniä vesiputouksia. Todella ihastuttava ja rauhallinen paikka lähellä kaupungin keskustaa.

Tablao Casa Camarón de la Isla

Tämä aivan uusi tablao avasi ovensa vasta kesäkuun lopussa ja kuulin siitä barcelonalaiselta flamencotanssijalta Sonia Salmerónilta. Tablao sijaitsee noin viiden minuutin päässä Sagrada Familian kirkolta, Verdaguerin metroaseman lähistöllä. Tablaon ideana on tarjota mahdollisimman autenttista flamenco Barcelonassa. Toivotaan, että yleisö löytää tämän tablaon, sillä miljöö on todella viehättävä ja tablaoon on panostettu paljon. Myös tunnin mittainen show oli erittäin hyvä.

Pares Baltà
Barcelonassa ollessa kannattaa ehdottomasti vierailla viinitilalla. Ja jos vierailee vain yhdellä viinitilalla, suosittelen ehdottomasti Pares Baltàa! Tämä perheyritys sijaitsee Pacs del Penedésissä, jone Barcelonasta pääsee helpoiten junalla Vilafranca del Penedésiin ja siitä taksilla. Vierailu tulee varata etukäteen ja vierailijoilta kysytään heidän aikaisemmasta viinituntemuksestaan, jotta vierailusta tulee henkilökohtainen. Tilan viinit viljellään biodynaamisesti ja aivan ensimmäiseksi vierailijoille kerrotaan tästä prosessista. Tämän jälkeen kerrotaan viininvalmistuksesta ja lopuksi maistellaan. Vieraillessamme tilalla maistelimme yhdeksää viiniä ja yhtä oliiviöljyä. Ilmankos tulimme tehneeksi myös aika paljon ostoksia vierailun päättyessä! Suosittelen ehdottomasti!

Sitges
Toinen viehättävä paikka Barcelonan ulkopuolella on Sitgesin kaunis ja kosmopoliittinen kaupunki noin 50 minuutin junamatkan päässä Barcelonan keskustasta. Sitgesissä on pieniä putiikkeja, ravintoloita ja myös ranta. Lisäksi rantoja on myös junamatkan varrella useita, esimerkiksi Castelldefelsissä. Jos haluaa vierailla vähän erilaisessa muse
ossa, voi käydä Sitgesin Casa Bacardíssa kuulemassa Bacardín historiasta ja valmistuksesta. Kierroksen lopuksi vieraat pääsevät myös itse tekemään ja nauttimaan rommidrinkin. Myös lapset ovat tervetulleita kierrokselle, mutta heille ei toki tarjoilla alkoholia. Sitgesin rantabulevardilla ehdottomasti vierailemisen arvoinen - jos arvostaa hyviä drinkkejä  - on Voramar. Paikan omistaja totesi minulle vaatimattomasti, että hänen pina coladansa on  galaksin paras. Ja olihan se kyllä hyvää.

Parque Laberinto de Horta

I hope that my observations about Barcelona in my previous blog posts - written with a bit of humour - did not give the impression that my attitude about the city is negative. It isn't so, they were merely observations that I have made during the last two months. Barcelona is a great city with a lot to see and do for everybody. Because I have visited the city before and because now we had the time, we had the chance to visit places a bit further away from the "usual sights". For example, we went to Nou Barris to see "Catalunya promet", a flamenco recital of local schools at the barrio's yearly flamenco festival. It was quite evident that foreigners don't often visit Nou Barris as the taxi driver on our way back asked what on earth were we doing there.

My picks for Barcelona are:

Monasterio de Pedralbes
The Pedralbes Monastery was inaugurated in the 14th century by Queen Elisenda for the Clarissas Order and remained in use as a monastery all the way until the 1980s. The monastery is a peaceful place to visit a short train ride away from Barcelona center. Take the FGC train to Reina Elisenda and walk the short way to the monastery. The monastery exhibits the way of life of the nuns during many centuries. After visiting the monastery it is worth while passing by Finca Güell to admire Antoni Gaudí's dragon gate and a little bit further the beautiful gardens of Palacio Real de Pedralbes. In front of the Palacio Real there is a metro station to return to the city.

Parque Laberinto de Horta
Also this park is a little bit further away from the city center. The park can be best reached by metro, the station is called Mundet. There is a short stroll to the former park of a noble family with a labyrinth, a forest and picnic tables. So pick up something to eat and drink and get lost! There are also several small waterfalls at this peaceful place. I really recommend it if the hustle and bustle of the city get to you!

Tablao de Casa Camarón de la Isla
This is a brand new tablao as it opened its doors at the end of June. I heard of the tablao from a Barcelonian flamenco dancer, Sonia Salmerón. This tablao is located about five minutes from Sagrada Familia, near the metro stop Verdaguer. The idea is to show people the best and most authenic flamenco in Barcelona. I sincerily hope that the audience finds this charming place as the hour-long show was a really good one!

Pares Baltà

When in Barcelona, you really should visit a winery. And if you only visit one, this is the one to visit. This family-owned winery is located in Pacs del Penedés and it is best reached from Barcelona by taking the train to Vilafranca del Penedés and then a taxi to the winery. A tour must be reserved before hand as the visits are tailormade for each visiting group. The visit begins with a tour of the biodynamic vineyards during which the process is explained. After this in the winery, the tour guide explains the process of winemaking and after this it is time to taste. During our visit we tasted nine wines and one olive oil. No wonder we bought so much wine as we left! I strongly recommend this!

Sitges
Another really nice place to visit outside Barcelona is the charming, cosmopolitan town of Sitges approximately 50 minutes train ride away. The town is full of small boutiques and restaurants and there is also a beach. There are several nice beaches along the train ride as well, for example in Castelldefels. If you want something a little different, visit Casa Bacardí and here about the history of the drink and the process of making it. In the end guests get to make their own drinks. Children are welcome on the tour but of course are not served alcohol. Another place in Sitges to visit if you enjoy a well-made drink is Voramar at the beach. The owner told me that his pina colada is the best in the galaxy. And it really was good!

Opittuja asioita 2 // Lessons Learned 2

Kun jotain alkaa miettimään, tulee uusia asioita mieleen jatkuvasti.

Esimerkiksi, tänään ajattelin töistä kotiin kävellessä: blogin (tai jonkin omakohtaisen artikkelin) kirjoittamisessa ja flamencon tanssimisessa vaikeinta on päättää, kuinka paljon haluaa itsestään paljastaa. Jos ei anna itsestään mitään, ei tekemisessä ole mitään järkeä. Mutta paljastaessaan itsestään asioita, tekee itsestään haavoittuvaisen.

Muita opittuja asioita Barcelonassa:

1. Sunnuntai-iltoja ei kannata tuhlata kotona mököttämiseen. Maanantaiaamu tulee joka tapauksessa. Parempi on lähteä kaupungille katsomaan, mitä maailmaan kuuluu, mennä kahville, syömään, drinkille, tapaamaan kavereita, elämään elämää.

Toki tämä ajatus punnitaan sitten marraskuussa, kun Helsingissä sataa räntää vaakasuoraan!!

2. Punainen valo on vain suositus katsoa tuleeko autoja tai kuinka kovaa ne tulevat. Paikalliset juoksevat lähestulkoon auton alle. Itse olen sen verran varovainen, että varmistan ettei autoja tule ennen kuin hyökkään liikenteeseen.

3. Toisten ihmisten väistäminen on ihan yliarvostettua. On ihan ok kävellä muita päin, muiden yli tai muiden edessä. Antaa muiden väistää. :D

4. Aikakäsitys on täällä erilainen kuin Suomessa. Jos joku sanoo tulevansa 15 minuutin päästä, valmistaudu odottamaan vähintään 30 minuuttia. Asiat ei vaan ole niin justiinsa...

Ja pienenä lisävinkkinä: Barcelonassa on paljon nähtävää. Ja paljon ihmisiä. Ja paljon taskuvarkaita. Karttaa ei kannata pysähtyä lukemaan keskellä katua. Keskelle katua yhtäkkiä pysähtyvä saa muut hermostumaan. Ja ennen kaikkea karttaa lukeva ja ympärilleen katseleva matkailija on taskuvarkaiden kohteena, etenkin suosituilla nähtävyyksillä kuten Las Ramblasilla tai Sagrada Familialla. Itse katson karttaa kotona / hotellilla etukäteen, pysähdyn kahvilaan tai terassille tarkistamaan sijainnin tai vähintään siirryn kadunreunaan. Mukavia tutkimusretkiä kaikille!

When you start thinking about something, new things come to mind all the time.

For example, today when walking home from work I thought: The most difficult thing about blogging (or writing an article about your own experiences) and flamenco dancing is deciding how much you want to reveal about yourself. If you don't reveal anything, it is not worth doing. If you reveal a lot, you make yourself vulnerable to the world.

Here are some more Lessons Learned from Barcelona:
(NB! Don't take these too seriously!)

1. There is no sense mobing around the house on Sunday evening. Monday morning will come regardless of what you do. It is best to go out, explore the city, go for a coffee, or dinner, or drinks or go see friends, live life!

Of course we'll see about this in November when sleet is flying horizontally from the sky in Helsinki!!

2. Red lights are just a reminder to check if there are cars coming or how fast they are driving. The locals will cross on red and practically run under a car. I prefer to check that there is really no one coming before I cross.

3. There is no need to mind other people on the street. It is perfectly ok to bump into people, run over them or stroll in front of them. Let other people mind you. :D

4. The sense of time is different here. If some one says they'll be there in 15 minutes, be prepared to wait for at least 30 minutes. It is just not so important...

And one tip: In Barcelona there are a lot of things to see. And a lot of people. And a lot of pick pockets. Don't stop in the middle of the street to read a map. You'll annoy people and make yourself vulnerable to petty thieves, especially in crowded attractions such as Las Ramblas or Sagrada Familia. I prefer to read the map at home or in the hotel. Then I will stop in a café and on a terrace if I need to check something. Or the very least go to the side of the street so I am not in everybody's way. Happy exploring!!

Opittuja asioita // Lessons learned

El Niño de Freixenet

Lähdin tähän Barcelonan seikkailuun flamenco-opettajani Elinan kannustus mielessäni. Kevätkauden lopussa hän sanoi minulle: "Mene ja mene rohkeasti. Nauti, tanssi, syö ihanaa ruokaa ja juo hyvää viiniä." Näitä sanoja olen kantanut sydämessäni koko tämän kahden kuukauden ajan ja pyrkinyt niitä toteuttamaan parhaani mukaan.

Kuten kaikkien "projektien" lopussa, on tullut aika kerrata opittuja asioita. Tässä huomioita viimeiseltä kahdelta kuukaudelta (Huom! Nämä on kirjoitettu pilke silmäkulmassa!!):

1. Koskaan ei ole huono aika juoda hyvää drinkkiä (oli se sitten cavaa, roseeta, aperolia, olutta tms.).

2. Kaikki Barcelonassa on suunnattu matkailijoille. Sen ei kannata antaa hämätä. Joka paikassa on matkailijoita, lähes joka paikassa on kallista. Halpojakin paikkoja on. Jos joku paikka näyttää kivalta tai kiinnostavalta, mene sinne. Älä tuhlaa aikaa etsien paikkoja, jotka on halpoja tai ei ole matkailijoille suunnattuja. Ne tulevat kyllä vastaan. Toki voit itse vaikuttaa siihen, missä kaupun
ginosassa "asioit", esim. Eixamplessa on paljon edullisia kivoja paikkoja. Vanhasta kaupungista suosittelen Barrí Goticin sijaan El Bornin kaupunginosaa Vía Laietanan toisella puolella. Viehättävä kaupunginosa on täynnä kivoja baareja ja ravintoloita, pieniä putiikkeja. Ja on myös halvempi.

3. Vaikka puhuisit kuinka hyvää espanjaa, sinun oletetaan olevan matkailija, jos näytät siltä tai puhut jotain muuta kieltä. Tarjoilijat puhuvat sinulle englantia, vaikka olisit vain hetki sitten keskustellut heidän kanssaan espanjaksi. Älä loukkaannu. Puhu sitkeästi espanjaa, kyllä hek
in sitä sitten aikanaan puhuvat. Ja usein myös muistavat kehua kielitaitoasi.

Diego El Cigalá Teatre Grec

I came on this adventure armed by the supportive words from my flamenco teacher Elina. At the end of the spring term she said to me: "Go and be brave. Enjoy, dance, eat lovely food and drink good wine." These words I have been carrying in my heart for these last two months and have done my best to comply.

At the end of any "project" it is important to contemplate the Lessons Learned. Here are some observations from these two months (NB! Don't take these two seriously!!):

1. It is never a bad time to have a good drink (whether it be rosado, cava, aperol, beer etc.).

2. Everything in Barcelona is aimed at tourists. Don't let it annoy you. There are tourists everywhere, almost every place is expensive. If some place looks nice or interesting go there. Don't waist your time looking for places that are cheap or not aimed for tourists. Those places will come. What you can influence is the barrios you visit. For example, Eixample has some very nice, inexpensive places. In the old town I recommend El Born instead of Barrí Gotic on the other side of Vía Laietana. The charming barrio is full of nice bars and restaurants and pittoresque shops. And it is cheaper.

3. Even if you speak the most impeccable Spanish, everyone will assume you are a tourist and speak English to you. Waiters will speak English to you even if you had just spoken with them in Spanish. Don't be offended. Be persistent with Spanish. In the end they will remember. And complement you on you language skills.
