5 vinkkiä Prahaan / Top 5 tips to Prague

Aloitimme kesälomamme muutaman päivän reissulla kauniiseen Prahaan. Matkailijoiden suosima kaupunki oli ehdottomasti näkemisen arvoinen. Tässä minun top 5 vinkkinä kaupunkiin:

1. Strahovin luostari

Vaikka Prahan vanhassakaupungissa on nähtävää yllin kyllin ja Prahan linna on vierailemisen arvoinen, meidän suosikkinähtävyytemme kaupungissa oli Strahovin luostari ja sen ympäristö. Luostarin puutarhoiden rauha toi miellyttävää vastapainoa heinäkuun tungokseen. Luostarin alueella on kolme ravintolaa, joista kahdesta - St. Norbertissa ja Bellevuessa - söimme lounasta. Molemmat tarjoilevat sekä perinteistä tsekkiläistä ruokaa että luostarin panimotuotteita. Bellevuessa pääsee herkullisen tarjoilun lisäksi nauttimaan (ja maksamaan) mielestämme kaupungin parhaista näköaloista.

2. Vintage Design Hotel Sax

Yksi matkan ehdottomasti parhaimmista elementeistä oli viihtyisä mutta myös persoonallinen hotellimme Vintage Design Hotel Sax. Hotelli sijaitsee Mala Stranan puolella rauhallisella lähetystöalueella ja sieltä on vain lyhyt matka niin Strahovin luostarille kuin Prahan linnaankin. Myös Kaarlen sillalle kävelee noin kymmenessä minuutissa. Hotelli on persoonallisesti sisustettu 60- ja 70-luvun tyyliin ja palvelu on ensiluokkaista. Hotellin aamiainen on herkullinen ja monipuolinen. Voin suositella hotellia kaikille.

3. Vinoteka U Mourenina

Todella viehättävä tuttavuus aivan hotellimme kulmilla oli viihtyisä viinibaari Vinoteka U Mourerina joka tarjoaa todella kohtuullisilla hinnoilla niin korkealuokkaisia tsekkiläisiä kuin italialaisia ja ranskalaisia viinejä. Viinibaarissa on hyvä hengähtää hetki vaikka ennen illallista hyvän viinilasillisen ääressä. Ystävällinen henkilökunta kertoo mielellään tuotteistaan ja viinejä myös myydään ulos baarista. Me nappasimme tuliaisiksi mukaan pullollisen erityisen hyvää tsekkiläistä valkoviiniä Tanzbergin viinitilalta.

4. Ravintola Mlejnice

Vanhastakaupungista voi olla hankala löytää kohtuuhintaista ravintolaa, mutta sivukadulla aivan astronomisen kellon lähistöllä voi nauttia herkullista lounasta ravintola Mlejnicessa. Ravintola on matkailijoiden suosiossa, mutta siitä huolimatta ruoka on herkullista ja hinnat kohtuullisia. Myös palvelu on ystävällistä. Vaikka taksikuskimme etukäteen valisti meitä, että ravintoloissa tarjoiltu gulassi ei ole tsekkiläistä vaan unkarilaista perinneruokaa, on leivän sisässä tarjoiltu tummaan olueen valmistettu gulassi on todella maukasta. 5. U Magistra Kelly

Mala Stranan puolella suosittelen pientä perheravintolaa U Magistra Kellyä. Ruoka on herkullista ja todella edullista verrrattuna moniin muihin ravintoloihin. Täällä maistelimme ensiluokkaista possun potkaa ja todella herkullisia kinkkutäytteisiä perunamykyjä ja palan painikkeeksi nautimme paikallisia juomia. Ravintolassa käy vain käteinen, joten tähän kannattaa varautua.

Vintage Desgn Hotel Sax

To start off our summer holiday, we took a few days off in beautiful Prague. The city is a great favorite among tourists and well worth a visit. Here are my top 5 tips to Prague:

1. Strahov Monastery

Even though there are a great many things to see in the old quarter and the Prague Castle merits a visit as well, our favorite among the many sights was the surroundings of Strahov Monastery. The peacefulness of the monastery gardens brought a welcome rest from the hustle and bustle of July below. There are three restaurants within the monastery grounds. We visited two of them for lunch, St. Norbert and Bellavista. Both offer tasty Czech specialties and also beer produced in the monastery. At Bellavista you can enjoy (and get to pay for it a bit, too) in our opinion of the best view to the city.

2. Vintage Design Hotel Sax

One of the best elements of our trip was our very personal and enchanting hotel Vintage Design Hotel Sax in the Mala Strana district. The hotel was situated in the peaceful embassy zone and the location near the Prague Castle and Strahov Monastery was perfect. Also The Charles Bridge was only a short ten minute walk away. The hotel staff and tasty and plentiful breakfast merit mentions, as well. I can recommend this hotel to everybody.

3. Vinoteka U Mourenina

Vinoteka U Mourenina

One of the other great acquaintances on our trip was the charming small wine bar Vinoteka U Mourenina very near to our hotel in Mala Strana. The wine bar offers a great variation of local Czech as well as Italian and French wines at very affordable prices. This is the perfect place to take a breather for example before dinner. The friendly staff is also very knowledgeable about the wines which can be bought to take with. We , for example, bought ourselves a souvenir of a very nice local white wine from the Tanzberg winery.





4. It may be hard to find an affordable lunch in the old quarter, but on a side street very close to the Astronomical Clock, there is the restaurant Mljenice. This restaurant is a great favourite amongst tourist, but nonetheless the food is good and the service is personable. Although our taxi driver told us that the ever present goulash is not a Czech specialty, but Hungarian, it is well worth to try the restaurant's dark beer goulash in bread. I recommend!

5. On the Mala Strana side I recommend the small family restaurant U Magista Kelly. The food is delicous and very affordable compared to many other restaurants. We tasted a first class pork shank and traditional ham-stuffed potato dumplings accompanied by local beverages. They only take cash, so it's good to be prepared for that.

Syksyn tullen / When Fall Arrives

Paella mixta

Tapanani on ollut kerran kesässä järjestää mökillämme juhla-ateria, johon kuuluu kana-äyriäispaella ja itsetehty sangría. Tällä kertaa tämän "fiestan" vietimme kesän - ja kesäloman - päättyessä elokuun viimeisellä viikonlopulla. Harmillisesti säät eivät tällä kertaa sallineet niin, että olisimme voineet nauttia paellasta ulkona, mutta hyvältä se maistui sisätiloissakin.

Flamenco

Kesäloman päättymisen myötä alkoi syksy flamencotunteineen ja opiskeluineen. Heti elokuun viimeisenä päivänä pääsin taas flamencon pauloihin, kun opettajani aloitti tuntimme. Tällä kertaa meillä on ohjelmassa naisellinen ja juureva tangos. Jälleen kerran flamenco antaa parastaan ja on samalla niin ihanaa ja aivan uskomattoman haastavaa. Jatkotason tangostuntien lisäksi tunteihini kuuluu tänä syksynä hikitekniikkatunti ja bata de cola-kurssi. Bata de colaa (laahushame) pääsin kokeilemaan ensimmäistä kertaa eilen ja fiilis oli lopulta positiviinen, vaikkakin - niin kuin flamencossa aina - jouduinkin hyppäämään epämukavuusalueelle. Mutta, vain epämukavuusalueella voi kehittyä ja oppia.

Kauden alku juhlittiin eilen illalla vielä flamencokoulu Fiesta Flamencan järjestämässä Feriassa, jossa oli vierailijoita Jerez de la Fronterasta, Espanjasta, asti. Illalla tanssittiin sevillanasta, nähtiin upeita esityksiä ja nautittiin hyvästä seurasta. Juhlat jatkuivat Johanneksen luolassa varmasti vielä pitkälle aamuyöhön. Viva la feria!

Sangría

For a few years now I have had the custom of having a feast of chicken and seafood paella and homemade sangría at our cottage. This time we enjoyed these treats as we celebrated the end of summer - and the end of our summer vacation - at the end of August. Unfortunately the weather did not favor us so that we could have eaten the paella outside, but it tasted equally as delicious indoors.

Viva la Feria

The end of our summer vacation marked the beginning of fall with flamenco classes and studies. My flamenco teacher started our classes on the last day of August. The choreography this fall is tangos, a earthy and womanly palo of flamenco. As always, flamenco gives us its best by being absolutely wonderful but at the same time incredibly challenging. In addition to the advanced tangos classes my schedule includes a "sweat technique" class and a weekend course with bata de cola. This was my first time using a bata de cola (a skirt with a train) and the overall feeling was quite positive although the class once again forces me far outside my comfort zone, as always with flamenco. However, venturing outside your comfort zone is the only way to learn and develop.


The beginning of the flamenco season was celebrated last night in style in the flamenco school Fiesta Flamenca in Helsinki with a Feria with guests all the way from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. In the evening there was a fiesta with sevillanas, fabulous performances and great company. The party in the cave of St. John continued most likely to the small hours of the morning. Viva la feria!

Ravintolakaupunki Barcelona / Barcelona Restaurant City

Barcelona on suuri ja mahtava kaupunki myös ravintolatarjonnan puolesta. Tapaksia tarjotaan jokaisessa baarissa ja ravintolassa ja enimmäkseen ne ovat todella hyviä. Paikallisia herkkuja ovat patatas bravas, perunat tulisen kastikkeen kera, bombas, uppopaistetut perunapallerot, jotka minusta muistuttivat aika lailla friteerattua perunasoselaatikkoa, ja monenlaiset merenherkut. Muita suosikkeja meidän perheessä ovat suussa sulava pata negra -kinkku, pienet pimientos de Padrón -paprikat ja perunamunakas.

Tlaxcal
Meksikolainen Tlaxcal oli ehdoton ykkönen meidän mielestämme, sillä ruoka oli tasaisen herkullista ja myös tarjoilu ystävällistä. Tacot ovat paikan erikoisuus ja niitä suosittelen kuten myös Tlaxcalin margaritoja. Erityisesti mangomargarita oli minun suosikkini, mutta myös guayabamargarita oli maukas. Viikonloppuna varaus on pakollinen!

Negro Carbón
Argentiinalainen pihvi- ja hampurilaispaikka, jossa on ystävällinen palvelu ja todella hyvä ruoka. Pihvit sulavat suussa ja myös hampurilaiset ovat erinomaisia. Myös patatas bravas -annos oli onnistunut sekä Campos Verdes -salaatti. Myös tänne on varattava pöytä viikonloppuna.

Blacklab
Port Vellin satamassa sijaitseva pienolutpanimo ja ravintola, todella kokeilemisen arvoinen. Vaihtuvat talon omat oluet ovat erinomaisia ja ruoka tasaisen maukasta. Hyvän ruuan ja oluen lisäksi täältä saa myös erittäin juomakelpoista viiniä!

Paikallista ruokaa tarjoavista ravintoloista suosikkimme oli Barcelonetan kaupunginosassa L'Ostia -niminen ravintola. Parhaat patatas bravas koko reissulla, tosin niissä oli mukana lihaa, eli ei sovellu kasvissyöjille, ainakaan sellaisenaan. Erinomainen oli myös italialainen Buon Appetito, jossa suosittelen erityisesti alkupalaksi provolone-uunijuustoa. Pizzat ja pastat erinomaisia ja palvelu erittäin hyvää. Myös tänne pöytävaraus perjantaina ja lauantaina on suositeltava. Intialainen ravintola Rangoli aivan San Sebastianin rannan lähettyvillä oli myös todella positiivinen kokemus, ruoka erinomaista ja palvelu todella ystävällistä.

Tapas in Barcelona

Barcelona is a great city also when it comes to restaurant selection. The traditional tapas dishes are available at every bar and mostly they are really good. Of the local delicacies I urge you to try patatas bravas, potatoes with spicy sauce and bombas, which made me think of deep-fried shephard's pie. And of course the seafood is readily available! Other favourites in our family are pata negra -ham, pimientos de Padrón -peppers and potato omelette.

Tlaxcal
This Mexican taquería is definitely worth the visit and was our absolute favourite with consistenly delicious food and friendly service. The tacos are exquisite with clean, simple flavours. Try also the margaritas, especially the mango margarita was my favourite, although the guayaba margarita was also tasty. For weekends reservation is a must!

Negro Carbón
This is an Argentinian steak and hamburger restaurant with really delicious food and friendly service. The Argentinian beef melts in your mouth and the burgers are nice as well. Patatas bravas was also a good choice for starter as was the Campos Verdes salad. Also here a reservation is needed for weekends!

Blacklab
This small brewery and restaurant is located at Port Vell in the harbour of Barcelona and serves house beers and really good food with friendly service. The house beers vary according to availability. We sampled the food on many occasions and it was consistently tasty. And, in addition to the food and tasty brews, the wines are also quite drinkable!

Our favourite for Spanish food was L'Ostia in Barceloneta with very tasty dishes and the best patatas bravas on this trip. There is some meat in the dish, so take this into consideration if you are a vegetarian. For Italian our favourite was Buon Appetito. I can strongly recommend the provolone al horno for starters and the pizza and pasta is really good as well. Make a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights. Also a favourite was the Indian Rangoli situated by San Sebastian beach. The food was really tasty and the service impeccable.
